The pattern was “boring in a good way” for weeks — rates flat-lined, giving potential refinancers predictability. The January 14 uptick is small but noticeable: across terms it’s a quarter-point move, which can add modestly to monthly payments and total interest. It looks like a single-day reaction rather than a multi-week surge so far, but it’s a reminder that even stable stretches can end quickly.
Over the past few months Sun Trust stayed almost frozen at the levels above, reflecting broader market calm. That flatness likely mirrored stable short-term interest expectations and limited movement in benchmark rates. The recent 0.25% bump is within the range lenders often adjust when market swaps or funding costs shift — not dramatic, but relevant if you’re refinancing soon.
If you’re 25–45 and thinking refinance, small rate moves matter. Shorter terms (24–36 months) still have the lowest APRs and save the most interest, while longer terms push the APR higher. Check your remaining balance: if you’re deep into a loan, a small rate drop might not cover fees. Conversely, if you have excellent credit and several years left on a high-rate loan, even a 0.25% improvement can be worth it.
