Sun Trust's refinance APRs are steady this month: 24‑month 6.74%, 36‑month 7.09%, 48‑month 7.24%, 60‑month 7.49%, 72‑month 8.09%. Rates have been remarkably flat day‑to‑day through March, making it easier to plan.
After a quieter December and early January when several terms dipped into the mid‑6% range (24m at 6.49%, for example), Sun Trust moved rates higher in mid‑January (roughly +0.25% on some terms). There were additional small lifts for longer terms in early February. Since those adjustments, the lender has held rates steady.
Compared with late 2025, today's APRs are modestly higher — especially for longer terms. That pattern reflects broader market moves last quarter: short bursts of rate pressure followed by consolidation. The day‑to‑day flatness you see now is typical when markets await macro signals (inflation data, Fed comments).
If you refinance, shorter terms (24–36 months) remain cheaper than stretching to 60– or 72‑month loans. A steady rate environment reduces the risk of waking up to a surprise jump the next day, but it also removes the window for a quick bargain — rates aren’t falling right now.
1) Run the numbers: refinance only if the new APR cuts your total interest by a meaningful amount — a rule of thumb is at least 0.5–1.0% savings depending on fees. 2) Improve your profile: better credit, a larger down payment or paying down other debt can lower offers. 3) Choose the right term: shorter loans save interest; longer loans lower monthly payments but cost more overall. 4) Read the fine print: verify fees and confirm there are no prepayment penalties. 5) Get competing quotes — banks, credit unions and online lenders can surprise you with better offers.
Short term: expect continued stability unless a major economic surprise hits. Medium term: rates could drift down if inflation cools and the Fed signals cuts; they could head up if inflation or risk sentiment picks up. If you already qualify for a meaningful rate drop, locking now is reasonable; if you can wait and signs point to easing inflation, a small downward move is possible later in the year.
