After a summer stretch of higher offers (many terms held around 7.24% and longer terms spiked near 7.99% in September), Sun Trust’s new car rates pulled back in early October. The shortest terms saw the steepest drop: 24‑month moved from ~6.99% to 6.24% and has stayed steady the last two weeks, while mid and longer terms eased but remain tiered upward with length.
From July through most of September 2025 Sun Trust kept rates elevated across loan lengths. A peak in late summer/early fall pushed many 48–72 month APRs into the high 7s. Since the first week of October the bank has shaved several tenths off rates, especially for 24–60 month loans, signaling a quick move toward more competitive pricing.
Expect modest movement, not fireworks. If macro signals (inflation, Fed decisions) stay calm, rates can nudge lower again. But if markets tighten, longer terms could tick up first. If you want predictability, lock a preapproval when the term and APR match your budget — waiting for a big drop is a gamble.
Aim for the shortest term you can afford: shorter loans here are consistently cheaper. Boost your down payment or trade equity to reduce the APR you’ll qualify for. Shop and get preapproved from a couple lenders — the table below makes that comparison fast. If you already have a loan and rates fall, consider refinancing after the first year.
Check your credit score and fix errors before applying, ask about fees and whether the APR quoted is conditional, and compare total interest paid, not just the headline APR. Small rate differences add up over a 60‑ or 72‑month loan.
Sun Trust has pulled rates down from late‑summer highs and is competitive now on shorter and mid terms.
