As of 03/25/2026 Sun Trust's posted APRs are: 24‑month 6.49%, 36‑month 6.99%, 48‑month 7.14%, 60‑month 7.74% and 72‑month 8.34%. Shorter terms remain lower; longer terms carry noticeably higher rates.
Through December and early January some terms were in the mid‑6% range (24m at 6.24%, others around 6.49–6.74%). Since mid‑January the market nudged up: short terms rose modestly (~0.25–0.5 points) while longer terms climbed more (roughly 0.5–1.1 points). In plain English: rates have moved up steadily over the past two months, with the biggest increases on 60– and 72‑month loans.
That spread between short and long loans means picking a longer loan can cost you hundreds or thousands over the life of the loan, even if monthly payments look tempting. Small changes in APR add up—especially on larger balances.
Expect cautious movement. If central bank policy stays tight or inflation surprises to the upside, loan APRs can inch higher. If economic signals cool and policy eases, rates could stabilize or slowly drift down. No one has a crystal ball, but current momentum favors a continued plateau or modest increases rather than sharp drops.
1) Aim for the shortest term you can afford—the APR and total interest drop significantly. 2) Boost your down payment to lower the loan amount and improve offers. 3) Get pre‑approved from multiple lenders and use that to negotiate at the dealership. 4) Check your credit score and pay down high‑interest debt to lower your rate. 5) If rates fall later, consider refinancing—many buyers recoup fees within a year or two.
