Quick read: short terms are the cheapest right now — 24‑month loans sit at about 6.49%, 36‑month at 6.99%, 48‑month at 7.14%, 60‑month at 7.74% and 72‑month at 8.34%. These are the daily retail APRs we track for Sun Trust on AutoLoanRate.com.
What we’re seeing: a small, industry‑wide bump in mid‑January (roughly +0.25%) that moved many terms from the mid‑6% range up a notch. Rates then held fairly steady through February. In late March longer terms (60–72 months) moved higher again, producing the widest spread between short and long loans in months.
Through December and early January many Sun Trust terms lived around 6.24%–6.64% for comparable loans. The January increase was modest but persistent; since then the 24‑ and 36‑month lanes have been the most stable, while the 60/72‑month lanes show more volatility — a reminder that lenders price longer terms for risk and duration.
If you’re buying now, shorter terms remain the best way to lower APR. A 24‑month loan at 6.49% will cost you higher monthly payments but much less interest over the life of the loan than the same car financed over 60+ months at 7.74%–8.34%.
Improve your credit score where you can before you apply, put more down to shrink the loan‑to‑value, and get pre‑qualified with multiple lenders — dealer financing isn’t always the cheapest. Consider a co‑signer only if it truly improves terms. If you don’t need the longest term, choose a shorter loan to save on interest.
No one has a crystal ball, but current movement suggests lenders are responsive to market rate signals: if benchmark rates stay elevated, expect longer terms to remain higher. If macro pressures ease (inflation cools, Fed signals rate cuts), we could see gradual relief and better offers later in the year — especially for prime borrowers.
