Auto loan rates in North Carolina.

Lenders quote North Carolina borrowers the same advertised APRs as everywhere else. What's different here: a 3% Highway Use Tax in place of sales tax, a trade-in credit that applies to it, a yearly vehicle property tax billed with your tags, and one of the largest credit unions in the country.

What's actually different about buying a car in North Carolina

The tax math on a real deal

A $35,000 dealer purchase with a $15,000 trade-in, anywhere in North Carolina:

At 3%, the trade-in credit is worth $450 on a $15,000 trade, a smaller edge than in higher-tax states. That makes a private sale easier to justify in North Carolina: if a private buyer pays more than about $450 above the dealer's trade offer, selling privately comes out ahead. Compare both in the trade-in equity calculator, and put the property tax into your monthly budget with the affordability calculator.

The North Carolina credit union bench

North Carolina has a strong credit union market led by one of the largest credit unions in the country. Get a pre-approval before the dealership finance office:

Rates move constantly, so verify current figures and membership rules before applying. With Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune and Seymour Johnson in the state, eligible families should also compare Navy Federal, PenFed and USAA; see military auto loan rates. Why credit unions usually price below banks: bank vs. credit union auto loans.

Frequently asked

Why did I pay Highway Use Tax on my doc fee?

North Carolina's HUT applies to the vehicle's retail value plus any dealer administrative fee regulated under state law, so the doc fee is part of the taxable amount. That's another reason to negotiate it.

Is there a North Carolina-only loan rate?

No. Lenders price by credit, term, and vehicle, not by state. The North Carolina-specific money is in the HUT rules, the property tax, and the credit union market.

How does a lease buyout get taxed in North Carolina?

Buying out your lease puts the title in your name, and none of the state's HUT exemptions cover a lease buyout, so expect the 3% Highway Use Tax again. Ask the leasing company or the DMV what value they will tax before you run the lease buyout math.

Do I pay tax on a car I'm refinancing?

No. Refinancing changes the lender, not the owner, so there is no sale or transfer for the HUT to apply to. See current refinance rates.
