At AutoLoanRate.com we track Sun Trust's daily APRs so you don’t have to. Right now short terms (24 months) sit around 6.49%, 36 months at ~6.99%, 48 months ~7.14%, 60 months ~7.74% and 72 months ~8.34%. Those numbers have been surprisingly steady over the past several weeks.
January started a touch lower (some 24–36 month offers dipped into the mid-6% range), then rates climbed into March and have flattened since. Mid-March saw small upticks for mid-to-long terms (36–72 months), and short terms have largely held steady. In plain English: Sun Trust moved off its January lows and has been keeping rates consistent day-to-day.
Short-term APRs were the first to recover from January lows; longer terms bounced around more, showing brief cuts in late February / mid-March before settling higher. That pattern suggests the bank is pricing in current market rates and protecting margins on longer loans that carry more risk over time.
Expect caution. If Fed policy stays steady and inflation cools, lenders could edge rates down slowly (good news). If the macro backdrop surprises to the upside, rates would likely tick up again — especially on 60–72 month loans. For most buyers, short-term rates are less volatile and usually cheaper overall.
1) Get pre-approved: lock a rate before you step on the lot. 2) Aim for a shorter term if you can — lower APR and less interest paid over time. 3) Boost your credit or add a co-signer to improve offers. 4) Put more down or trade in to lower loan-to-value and access better rates. 5) Compare — the table below lists daily APRs from other banks and lenders; shop around. 6) If rates drop later, refinance.
Sun Trust’s current story is one of stability after a small climb from January. If you’re ready to buy, rate-shop now and use those comparisons to pressure-test dealer offers. If you can wait and the economic signals point to a Fed easing, you might see better numbers down the road — otherwise locking a fair rate today isn’t a bad play.
