January started with lower mid‑4% to mid‑5% offers by term (36mo around 4.09%, longer terms up in the 5.2–5.3% range). February saw a bump — many terms ticked up (mid to high‑4s and even 5.27% on some 72/84‑month offers). Then in early March the market softened: lenders pulled rates back, especially on shorter terms. Bottom line: volatility in late winter, then a pullback that favors refinance shoppers right now.
Auto APRs follow broader interest rates and lender appetite. Movement tracks Treasury yields, recent economic reports (inflation, payrolls) and Fed guidance. When long‑term yields dip or lenders want to drive originations, you’ll often see those daily APRs fall — just like the data spotlights this week.
Short term: expect rates to track headlines. If inflation cools and the 10‑year Treasury drifts lower, these APRs could nudge down further. Conversely, hawkish Fed comments or hotter data could push them up again. Practically: watch 10‑year yields, the next CPI release and Fed commentary for clues.
